The SPA is composed of over 200 preeminent scientists and researchers who came together to debate, analyze, and assemble the accumulated knowledge of the scientific community, Indigenous peoples, and other stakeholders that live and work in the Amazon. It draws on the Science Panel for the Amazon’s unprecedented initiative convened under the auspices of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). Through participating in the Collaboratory, students have the opportunity to make a positive impact! Through four seminars given by experts and locals in the field, small group meetings, and a collaborative project as a deliverable, students will reflect, ideate, and collaborate to learn, discuss, and raise awareness about the state of the Amazon region. The Summer 2022 Collaboratory: The Amazon Region We Want is a virtual global program exploring the current state of the Amazon ecosystem and its communities. Global Seminar : The Solution Space: Finding Sustainable Pathways for the Amazon featuring speakers from Brazil, Colombia, and the U.S.Global Seminar : Land Use, Climate and Demographic Changes in the Amazon & their Impact featuring speakers from Brazil and the U.S.Global Seminar : The Amazon as a Regional Entity of the Earth System featuring speakers from Ecuador, Colombia, and Brazil.Global Seminar featuring Jeffrey Sachs, Sustainable Development Solutions Network.Students must participate in all events as part of joining the Summer 2022 Collaboratory. Programming for the Collaboratory will take place over 7 weeks and students should expect to spend 3 - 4 hours a week engaged with Collaboratory content, seminars and activities. Bockmon in the upcoming 2021 school year and are looking forward to working alongside our young future citizen scientist from our local public schools.Apply for the Summer 2022 Global Columbia Collaboratory: The Amazon Region We Want We are planning to continue to collaborate with Dr. Home Front EJ had recently reached out to Los Osos Middle School (LOMS) and have invited students to become ‘citizen scientist’ and join Emily’s team in collecting CO2 data around the estuary. By providing local atmospheric CO2 data while the water samples are being taken, we hope to provide Emily and her students information that will help us understand the correlation between atmospheric CO2, the amount of CO2 in the water and the relationship to OA.Īn integral part of the MBEAM project is to collaborate with our future climate action leaders and create opportunities for young ‘citizen scientist’ to get involved in helping address the climate crisis that humanity finds themselves in. While her students took water samples around the estuary, we provide local atmospheric CO2 data. We were invited to join Emily’s team on their water sampling route, where her students collected water samples at six different locations in the estuary. Emily and her team of students have been collecting estuarine water samples and are studying Ocean Acidification (OA) in the Morro Bay Estuary. Bockmon who is a professor of Marine Science at Cal Poly SLO, and is teaching marine chemistry. Recently we were invited to a virtual meeting with some of Cal Poly SLO University (Cal Poly SLO) academia working on climate change and its effects on our local environment. Home Front Environmental Justice, Morro Bay has been collecting and recording atmospheric Carbon Dioxide (CO2) data as part of the Morro Bay Estuary Air Monitoring (MBEAM) project since March 2020.
